Best of Regina

Thank you Regina for voting us "BEST REGINA FESTIVAL OR EVENT" *and* "BEST THING THAT HAPPENED TO REGINA IN THE LAST 12 MONTHS"!

We certainly couldn't pull it off without "BEST ARTS & CULTURE BEHIND-THE-SCENES MASTERMIND" (Sandra Butel, our amazing Artistic Director)!

This fabulous festival is created each year from the hearts and hands of hundreds and hundreds of brilliant people.  We have a fantastic board, wonderful staff (herded and inspired by the aforementioned mastermind and the extraordinary Ms. Jeannie Straub), a remarkable team of volunteer coordinators and hundreds of warm and giving volunteers.  These are the people without whom the festival could not happen.  We all work to create this festival because we each believe in the indelible power of it, the magic it creates that sparks and yet somehow sustains until the next year.

Thank you so much Regina!

The first of the Concert Series!! Calexico!

THE REGINA FOLK FESTIVAL CONCERT SERIES is pleased to announce:

CALEXICO
Friday, September 24th
at the Exchange 2431 8th Ave
...Doors open at 8pm

After wowing crowds (and festival organizers alike) on Saturday night of the 2010 Regina Folk Festival, they are back in Regina for one night! Boy, are we glad to have them!

There's always been intrigue and adventure at the heart of Calexico. Ever since they were a largely instrumental duo experimenting with their unique collection of instruments and soundtrack sensibilities, Joey Burns and John Convertino have constantly imbued their music with an unparalleled sense of drama, calling upon the myths and iconography of the American West and Mexico. They named themselves after a town near the California/Mexico border in honor of the cultural mélange that informs their diverse influences which includes Portuguese Fado, 50's jazz, Gypsy or Romany music and its offshoots, 60's surf and twang.

Calexico is: John Convertino - drums; Joseph Burns - vocals, guitar; Christopher Giambelluca - bass; Jacob Valenzuela - trumpet; Michael Carabajal - trumpet; Paul Neihaus - guitar; Sergio Mendoza - keys

Tickets are $20 in advance available at Bird Films or Vintage Vinyl
$25 at the door (subject to availability and with cash only)

There will be some seats available but this is a concert where standing and dancing are strongly encouraged. If you require a seat, be sure to arrive early as they are extremely limited.

Sponsors of the Regina Folk Festival Concert Series Include:
Saskatchewan Arts Board, SOCAN Foundation, Canadian Heritage, HRSDC, SaskCulture, City of Regina, Global Regina, Leader-Post, Rawlco Radio, CBC, 91.3 CJTR, Radio-Canada Saskatchewan, Ramada, prairie dog

Rah Rah in Concert at CBC

On Friday, September 24th Regina pop music lovers have a chance to experience the jovial high-spirited energy of Rah Rah at a free Culture Days concert in the CBC Regina Broadcast Centre (2440 Broad St.)!

Doors open at 7:00 pm and the show starts at 8:00.

Rah Rah

Described as Regina's "pop rock heart breakers" by the Prairie Dog, Rah Rah is a band that's really starting to create big-time buzz around the country.  Last year, iTunes crowned them "Best New Canadian Band" and "Best New Alternative Band", and they're getting great crowds out to their shows from Newfoundland to Vancouver.  This summer they released their second full length album "Breaking Hearts".  It explores the challenges of growing up - including the pain of falling in and out of love.  But don't think for a second that their show is a downer.  This is a high octane bunch of musicians with great live energy.

Seating is limited for this first-come first-served event, so be sure to arrive early to avoid disappointment.

Lost & Found!

Hello good folks!

I hope your August has been most splendid!  I think I can speak for everyone here and say it was pretty wonderful for us!

After coming back from holidays and sorting through some of the festival detritus, we've found a number of lost items and we'd love to return them to their owners.

If you've lost something please give us a phone call at 757-0308 or email info@reginafolkfestival.com.

We'll hold on to these things for a while but in a few weeks we will donate them to Salvation Army or destroy them (accordingly :)).

Thanks,
Amanda Minion
Communications & Administration Assistant

The daytime workshops drew in thousands of people to downtown Regina and the evening concerts provided a great mix of legends and new talent.  We had an excellent and eclectic line-up including John Prine, Calexico, Sarah Harmer, Arrested Development, Buffy Sainte-Marie and Patrick Watson. There were artists from all over Canada, the United States and South America and from right here!  Local artists were are always an incredibly important aspect of the festival!

In keeping with the folk festival tradition of showcasing cultural diversity, the RFF celebrated the Year of the Métis.  A workshop, 'Métissage: A Cultural Weave,' was hosted by Buffy Sainte-Marie and featured artists Ghostkeeper, Yves Lambert and Bette & Wallet.

With such heartfelt gratitude for so much participation from our audience and volunteers, our coordinators and sponsors, our artists and vendors, we at the Regina Folk Festival office are proud to have c-created with you the opportunity for music and community, for a tiny respite from rigidity and obligation, for sweaty dancing and sweet hand-holding.  Much love from all of us!

Get your calendars out!  We're already making plans for the 42nd Regina Folk Festival scheduled for August 5-7, 2011.

We're also making plans for the upcoming Concert Series!  Be sure to check the other side to our website for details!

Regina Folk Festival Performers grace the Polaris Prize Long List

The passionate Polaris peeps picked a pile of perfect performers!

Out of the 40 that made it on the Long List, two will grace the stage in Victoria Park this summer.  Even more on the list have done so before.  We have a few things in common I'd say - RFF & Polaris, like two peas in a pod.

Ghostkeeper and Justin Rutledge are honoured for their recent releases, Ghostkeeper and  The Early Widows respectively.

Past RFF performers that also made the list are: Owen Pallet, The Sadies, Tegan & Sara, Hawksley Workman, Broken Social Scene and Basia Bulat.

Check polarismusicprize.ca to see the other 32 bands.  You may want to hear 'em.  I'd bet on it.

Ghostkeeper at three other festivals this year!

2010 Regina Folk Festival performers, Ghostkeeper are also performing at 2010's NXNE Music Festival along with the Calgary Folk Festival and the Winnipeg Folk Festival in support of their recently released self-titled album.

Calgary-based Ghostkeeper produces raw and electrifying music. A colourful patchwork of heartfelt, outsider blues and noisy pop, perhaps their music can be best understood through the distinctive Northern Alberta origins of Shane Ghostkeeper (vocals, guitar) and Sarah Houle (drums, vocals). Raised in High Level and the Paddle Prairie Metis Settlement, Shane & Sarah spent their adolescence isolated by geography, listening to folk and blues records passed down by family members, slowly developing an admiration for individuals that had the ability to convey rich stories through song. Both identified with traditional folk heroes like Hank Williams or Robert Johnson; likewise, the duo shared a history populated by larger-than-life characters as colourful as those in the songs they grew up with. While traditional influences remain at the very core of Shane's songwriting, a healthy irreverence towards standard song structure and an idiosyncratic storytelling voice results in something undeniably Ghostkeeper.

Keep an eye on these lovely ones!
